Council wants prompt assessments

North Huron council was pleased to receive an update from MPCA (Municipal Property Assessment Corporation) on products and services, but they’d prefer an accurate voter’s list and will send a letter reminding them of the need for improvements.
In discussion at the Jan. 2 meeting of council, there were a few pointed comments about deficiencies in the voter’s list being responsible for North Huron’s loss of one of its two seats on Huron County council, although there’s no proof. The recent decision that reduced the size of county council is presently under appeal.
Deputy Reeve David Riach and Coun. Bernie Bailey made the motion that a letter be sent reminding MPAC that North Huron would like to see improvements to the voter’s list.
Reeve Neil Vincent temporarily left the reeve’s chair to address the issue of assessments, saying MPAC is “three and four years behind building permits.” He said he’d like to see MPAC act on assessing completed work in a “timely manner.” That would be within two years. MPAC not following up on completed projects for three or four years means the municipality misses out on taxes.
The municipality has to make information on building reports available monthly.

Best snow budget

Reeve Neil Vincent commented on the lowest snow removal expense for December in memory. The months of January, February and March 2011 saw the snow removal budget for the municipality take quite a hit.
