A 20-year-old Bluevale man is in custody after a traffic stop by the Wingham Police Service north of Wingham ended in an extensive search of the area for the accused.
At 3:12 a.m., a Wingham police officer was on patrol when he observed a vehicle go through the stop sign at George and Josephine streets without coming to a full stop.
Police stopped the vehicle north of Wingham on London Road. The driver exited the vehicle and falsely identified himself.
When speaking to him, the officer detected the odour of an alcoholic beverage.
When he was read the breath demand, he responded, “No, I will not do that.”
The man was placed under arrest for refusal. The driver then assaulted the officer. A struggle ensued and the accused broke free and fled through a field.
The OPP were called as backup and a K-9 unit was requested. The K-9 unit conducted a track to a Mary Street residence where the suspect was located hiding in the basement bedroom closet.
The officer was treated at Wingham and District Hospital for minor injuries and released.
