“It’s new for me,” said Debbie Gammie, who was recently named co-chair for the 2010 United Way campaign, the first year for the Perth-Huron partnership.
Lucknow resident Gammie is a branch manager of the Wingham Libro Financial Group. She said Libro was approached by the United Way and the company thought it was a worthwhile project since it has offices in both Huron and Perth.
With the United Way partnership between Huron and Perth, Gammie said it was important for the United Way to have co-chairs in both areas so residents don’t feel their contributions are swallowed up in another area.
Despite the lack of experience, which Gammie said Perth co-chair Marty Rops also doesn’t have, she is confident. She added the role doesn’t require day-to-day experience in the United Way adminstration but is instead about talking to people and businesses.
This is a role Gammie describes as a natural fit for her since she has experience with groups such as the chamber of commerce and the hospital foundation.
She added the co-chairs will meet this week as they begin to plan for the September kickoff.
“There is a lot of work to do,” noted Gammie as the group sets its goals over the next few months.
“It wasn’t hard to be convinced to come on board,” she said and added Libro has been very supportive of the role.
“It’s good for the community and good for the company,” said Gammie.
