With one game remaining in the regular season the Wingham Ironmen sit three points back of the Kincardine Bulldogs and will start the playoffs on the road in Kincardine, but Ironmen coach Chad Haggitt said it shouldn’t be a problem.
Haggitt said the Ironmen have already won in Kincardine and have more talent than the Bulldogs.
The Ironmen rolled over the Mount Forest Patriots Friday night, but the Bulldogs maintained their lead by also beating the Patriots Saturday night.
With 61 points, Walkerton has a lock on first place while Mitchell and Hanover continue to fight for second with both sitting at 48 points.
Friday night with Mount Forest visiting, Chris Corbett had the Ironmen on the board just 33 seconds into the game before Brady Houston made it 2-0 10 seconds later.
Haggitt said the Ironmen had a bit of a letdown after taking the lead, but after the Patriots tied it, Wingham took over for the win.
The Patriots cut the lead in a half midway through the period and tied it early in the second, but it was all Wingham after that as Tyler Kellum and Steve Kerr gave the Ironmen a 4-2 lead going into the third.
Corbett added his second of the game 38 second into the final period and Andrew Turton put the game away at 6:03 for the 6-2 Wingham win.
Haggitt said one thing the Ironmen will continue to practice is the power play, which he said they need to take more time setting up and not panic.
Going into the playoffs, Haggitt said the Ironmen will probably shorten their bench a bit. While the Ironmen were slightly below where Haggitt was hoping for the season, he added the league has been extremely tight this season and the players have realized they can never let up.
Wingham hosts Walkerton Friday night to finish the regular season.
