The Wingham Bantams have put another feather in their cap by defeating the Minto Township Mad Dogs 3-0 in a best-of-five series Thursday night to win the WOAA. Wingham outscored their opponents 18-6 in the three games, which were closer than the scores would indicate.
Game one scoring was led by Tanner Kirkby with four goals and single markers went to Josh Stewart and Daniel Kemp. Game two was spread out with two goals to Garrett Davidson and singles to Kirkby, Stewart, Kemp and Garrett Stafford. Davidson and Kirkby continued with their strong playoff run with two each in game three with singles to Kemp and Austin Chaffe.
On the way to the title, Wingham defeated Durham 6-1 and 6-1 to win the best-of-three match, setting up the showdown with Minto. Scoring was spread out with Jesse Deans, Bailey Poels and Jake Tolton also finding the score sheet in this series.
The goaltending tandem of Luke Dailleboust and Tyler Cleghorn, with strong defensive play from Brent Montgomery, Ryan Shiell, Stafford, and Chaffe, kept the goals against low
Wingham moves on to play Beeton in a best-of-five series for the OMHA quarter-finals. The boys will be seeking redemption, as it was Beeton that knocked Wingham out of the playdowns two years ago. Check out winghamhockey.com for more details.
