The first game against Saugeen Shores was an evenly matched game with both teams working hard. Goaltender Josiah Moores of Wingham came up with some very big saves to keep the score at 0-0 through two periods.
Halfway through the third period Ally Marston on defence made a nice pass up the boards where Garrett Golley out-hustled the Saugeen Shores defender to pick up the loose puck and put it in the net, giving Wingham the lead.
The team played well defensively the remainder of the game, giving them the 1-0 win and advancing them to the “A” side of the tournament.
In the second game Wingham faced Mount Forest, who had also won their previous game.
Due to the tournament format, teams had to win their second game regardless of their first game in order to advance. Like the first game, the teams were evenly matched with Wingham having a number of chances to score but were unable to finish.
Goaltending again proved strong for both teams and again after two periods the game was scoreless, but late in the third period Mount Forest was able to get a bounce and slip one into the Wingham net.
Wingham needed an equalizer and pressed the play very hard, again having chances to tie the game, but despite their efforts, lost 1-0.
Although eliminated, the kids enjoyed a good day of hockey and should be very proud of how they played.
This was a good lead-in to playoffs which see them play in a home and home series against Tiverton, Lucknow and their cross town rivals Wingham #1 starting Feb. 18.
