The Wingham Falcons Midget fastball team competed in the OASA Elimination tournament in Owen Sound June 25-27, which determined the Ontario teams that will compete in the Softball Canada National Championship in Stratford the first week in August.
The boys drew the K-W Twins as their must-win, first-game opponent and played well but came away on the short end of a 4-2 score.
Hits by Jason deVos, Kyle Johnston and Mike Ballagh produced a -0 lead in the second inning but K-W tied the game and went ahead in the third on a Wingham error and two hits just inside the foul line.
Chad Foxton doubled and scored in the seventh and Adam Cronin and Derek Deitner singled but could not score to tie the game. George Armstrong had eight strikeouts and allowed six hits on the mound for Wingham while Brenden Roach was the winner for K-W with 10 strikeouts and nine Wingham hits.
McNab from the St. Catharines area was next and after a five-hour rain delay Wingham came out swinging. Tom Fisher singled, tripled and scored twice to lead the offence in the 10-3 win. Ty Black crossed the plate twice, deVos three times and Tyson Soers and Ryan Chambers also had hits. Chambers pitched for the winners with Deitner coming in to strikeout the last two batters to seal the win.
Game three Saturday night was a match with the Sebringville Sting with Ty Sebastion pitching for the Sting and Armstrong for the Falcons.
Wingham broke the game open in the fifth by scoring three times on three hits and a walk, all with two out.
Fischer and Armstrong singled, Chambers walked and Adam Cronin knocked them in. Foxton and Ballagh singled and scored along with Fischer and deVos in the next frame to make the final 7-0. Armstrong allowed one hit and struck out 11 over six innings for Wingham. Sebastion allowed seven hits, three walks and struck out three batters for Sebringville.
Sunday morning saw the Falcons line up against the Napanee Express.  A quick start for Napanee put them up 2-0 in the first but Wingham replied with a two-run homer by Fischer with deVos on base.
The Falcons put up two more runs in the second on hits by Black, Cronin and deVos to go up 4-2 but Napanee broke the game open in the third, scoring five times on some tough plays for hits, an error and a two-out two-run homer.
Armstrong took the loss on the mound for Wingham allowing eight hits and striking out three, with four Wingham errors. Soers was at his best with more excellent catches in the outfield over the weekend!
The OASA Falcons will now compete in the provincial ‘B’ championship tournament in August.
The top three teams were the undefeated Oshawa BB’s, the Walkerton Wild and Sydenham Cyclones who, along with the host Stratford will be the Ontario reps for the national tournament.
This year’s Falcon team members from Wingham are deVos, Foxton, Johnston and Armstrong as well as Black, Kirby Cook and Cronin from Blyth. Other team members include Fischer, Chambers and Ballagh from Teeswater along with Soers and Deitner from Mildmay.
